BPI France-backed collaboration powered by O-RAN–compliant rApps

Intent-Driven RAN Automation Platform at MWC 2026

BPI France’s INTENTION-6G project brings together Ericsson, Orange, CentraleSupélec, and BubbleRAN as collaborators with a shared objective of exploring how to minimize the energy consumption of the Radio Access Network (RAN) while meeting the requirements of 5G/6G traffic.

At MWC Barcelona, in a live demonstration, this BPI France-backed collaboration will showcase intent-driven RAN automation powered by O-RAN–compliant rApps that run across both Ericsson and BubbleRAN’s RAN automation platforms. This collaboration has resulted in an initial prototype of two families of Service Level Agreement rApps addressing key operator priorities, most notably Green SLA (energy efficiency) and Premium SLA (performance assurance).

The live demo shows how operators, vendors, and ecosystem partners can accelerate network automation and intelligence using the Green SLA or Premium SLA rApps that encapsulate intent and map it to measurable operational objectives, such as reducing energy consumption and protecting premium user experience. These rApps continuously optimize network performance and efficiency as conditions change, supporting the full network lifecycle including evolution, deployment, optimization, and self-healing.

AI-ready interoperability

This demo showcases an intent-driven RAN automation workflow, enabled by interoperable rApps that optimize user performance against specified SLA objectives. It highlights initial rApp interoperability over the R1 interface between the Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform (EIAP) and BubbleRAN Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) or RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) platforms, demonstrating how the same rApps and associated automation logic can be deployed consistently across different O-RAN–compliant SMO and RIC environments, ensuring portability and ecosystem openness. The demo also introduces AI-ready automation workflows, delivering data-driven insights, closed-loop recommendations, and governed execution with built-in operational guardrails.

“Innovation in the Open RAN ecosystem thrives on collaboration and co-creation. By leveraging the two families of SLA-based rApps, we are demonstrating how intent-driven RAN control, AI-based slice enforcement, and advanced policy management can seamlessly integrate to deliver tangible network performance and efficiency for operators.” says Navid Nikaein, CEO, BubbleRAN

The full demonstration will be live at MWC Barcelona March 2–5, 2026 at BubbleRAN stand 5D97.

About Intention 6G project

The four collaborations of this demo, Ericsson, Orange, CentraleSupelec and BubbleRAN are part of the INTENTION-6G consortium funded by BPI France. The main objective of the INTENTION-6G project is to minimize the energy consumption of the Radio Access Network (RAN) while meeting the requirements of 5G/6G traffic. AI-based RAN procedures capable of automatically fulfilling intentions are developed within the project framework and a proof of concept to validate them. This project was funded by the French State as part of the France 2030 program.
