From R&D and open source to production and ecosystem impact
Innovation is increasingly created across research organisations, open-source communities, standards bodies, vendors and collaborative ecosystems rather than inside a single vertically integrated stack.
At BubbleRAN, openness is not simply a technology choice. It is part of how we innovate, engineer products and collaborate with the wider telecom community. Our approach connects research and development, open source, production engineering and ecosystem collaboration so that promising technologies can move from ideas and prototypes towards dependable real-world deployment.
This is the principle behind our strategy:
Open source is the foundation. Production-grade engineering is the bridge. The ecosystem is the multiplier.
Connect R&D to production
BubbleRAN operates across an innovation continuum that is often fragmented across different organisations, from R&D to the deployment in production. We connect R&D to production by building on open source and adding the engineering, validation and productization required for dependable deployment.

Research creates new ideas. Open source makes technology easier to inspect, improve and reuse. Engineering and validation establish how components behave together. Productization adds automation, observability, lifecycle management, documentation and support. Deployment then provides the operational feedback that informs the next cycle of innovation.
The key is the continuity between these stages. BubbleRAN does not simply package open-source components; we work across the path that turns innovation into usable telecom systems.
Treat openness as a strategy, not a licence choice
Open-source software, open standards and open ecosystems play different but complementary roles.
- Open source provides shared technologies that can be inspected, improved and reused under their applicable licences.
- Open standards and APIs create common interfaces and improve interoperability across implementations and vendors.
- Open ecosystems connect the people and organisations that create, integrate, validate and improve technology over time.
BubbleRAN deliberately combines all three. We build on mature open-source technologies where they provide a strong foundation. We favour open standards, open APIs and modular architectures where they preserve interoperability and customer choice. We contribute upstream when improvements are broadly useful, while investing in differentiated BubbleRAN capabilities where customers need additional value.
That leads to a simple principle:
Open where it creates ecosystem value. Differentiate where it creates customer value.
Our differentiation includes multi-vendor integration, deployment automation, lifecycle management, observability, AI-driven optimisation, orchestration, validation tooling and production support.
Give open source an industrial model
Open source creates lasting value only when the engineering around it can be sustained. Our MX-PDK platforms build on open-source and commercial technologies and add the software, tooling, integration, automation, validation and support needed to operate them as coherent telecom environments.
The commercial value is therefore not in replacing open source. It is in industrialising it, connecting it and making it usable at scale. Commercial products and services sustain continued engineering, maintenance and support. Upstream collaboration strengthens the shared foundation. In this model, open-source innovation and commercial value reinforce one another.
Extend open source into an open ecosystem
Useful innovation should not remain isolated inside a project, laboratory or company.
TelcoFabric extends BubbleRAN’s openness strategy beyond source code. It provides an open ecosystem where xApps, rApps, AI agents, models, datasets, benchmarks, blueprints and other telecom artifacts can be published, discovered, reused and improved by a wider community.
B-Labs complements TelcoFabric’s model through selected members that contribute to testing, benchmarking, interoperability and integration activities helping build evidence and trust around ecosystem artifacts.
The result is a broader innovation loop from Open Source and R&D to BubbleRAN Engineering providing MX-PDK platforms and TelcoFabric portal, all available for users to accelerate innovation.
A European opportunity
The EU Open Source Strategy places open source at the centre of Europe’s technological sovereignty and takes a full-lifecycle view, from R&D and market uptake to deployment, maintenance and long-term governance.
For telecom, this creates a clear opportunity. Europe should not only produce excellent research and open-source technologies; it should also build companies and ecosystems capable of industrialising, maintaining, operating and scaling them.
BubbleRAN aims to help demonstrate that model: a European telecom company that builds on open source, contributes to open ecosystems, creates differentiated products and connects innovation to production.
